Work Experience

Thinking of a career in the arts? Each year a limited number of work experience placements are available at The Opera Centre in Sydney and The Opera Centre in Melbourne. The aim of work experience at Opera Australia is to give students an overall feel for how an opera company is run and to give students an opportunity to appreciate the work that is involved behind the scenes. Due to the large number of applications received, we are not able to accept all students who apply.

Work Experience Sydney

Work experience takes place at The Opera Centre in Surry Hills, Sydney. Work experience placements are available only during the Sydney Summer and Winter Seasons. We encourage applications from secondary school students for work experience placements of one-week periods only, from Monday to Friday.

Supervised by the Human Resources Assistant, work experience students are given the opportunity to help with or observe work being completed in various departments, from Orchestra Management to Development, Marketing, Publicity or Artistic. Where the schedule allows, students may observe rehearsals at The Opera Centre. If a chaperone is available students may also have the opportunity to observe rehearsals at the Sydney Opera House and, if time permits, be given a backstage tour of the Opera House.

We also encourage applications for longer-term internships/secondments from tertiary students studying music, performance, arts administration, arts management or stage management.

Work Experience Melbourne

Opera Australia’s Melbourne office offers up to six work experience placements to secondary school students each year. The placements are based at The Opera Centre in Southbank, Melbourne. Placements are for one-week periods only, from Monday to Friday.

Work experience placements are generally available only during the Melbourne Autumn Season and the Melbourne Spring Season. However, from time to time they may also be available in the fortnight leading up to the start of the Melbourne Autumn Season and the fortnight leading up to the start of the Melbourne Spring Season.

Supervised by the Office Administrator, work experience students may be given various arts administration tasks and may have the opportunity to work with staff from the Development department or staff from Oz Opera, the touring arm of Opera Australia. Work experience students may also have the opportunity to assist in our Company Office at the Arts Centre, which is responsible for co-ordinating the day-to-day activities of the performing company, and seeing to the welfare of the artists and artistic staff of Opera Australia. Where the schedule allows, students may observe rehearsals at The Opera Centre and the Arts Centre and, if time permits, be given a backstage tour of the Arts Centre.
