Background

Is in his eighth season both as Music Director of Norway's Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Artistic Director of Minnesota Orchestra's Sommerfest. Previously Music Director of the Dallas Symphony, 1994-2006, and Principal Conductor of Britain's Bournemouth Symphony, 1988-1994. He guest conducts the world's leading orchestras and opera companies and has a discography of almost 90 recordings, including a Grammy and other honors. A New Yorker, he holds bachelor's and master’s degrees from Juilliard in piano and conducting

Highlights of the current season include returning to the Deutsche Oper Berlin for a new production of R. Strauss's Die Liebe der Danae and a new production of La bohème in Bergen. He has appearances with the Royal Philharmonic both at the BBC Royal Albert Hall Proms and Royal Festival Hall. He is also working with the City of Birmingham Symphony, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, MDR Sinfonie of Leipzig, BBC Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra, amongst others
