Grace Barnes



Originally from Scotland, Grace was recently resident director on the National Theatre of Great Britain/Global Creatures Australia tour of “War Horse”.  Prior to that, she directed “Ordinary Days” at the Darlinghurst Theatre and was Resident Director on the Australian tour of  “West Side Story” and “Guys and Dolls”.  For Cameron MacKintosh Grace was Resident Director on the UK tour of “Martin Guerre” and the London premiere of “The Witches of Eastwick”.  She was the Resident Director for the Australian premiere of “Sunset Boulevard” and subsequently spent a year in Germany as resident director on the German production. 

Grace has been a guest director for the Australian Opera on productions of “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Simon Boccanegra”and “Falstaff” and whilst previously with the company directed studio productions of “Rags” and “Dear World”.  She was assistant director at Sydney Theatre Company on productions of “Into the Woods”, “The Threepenny Opera”, “Dead Funny”, “As You Like It” and directed “The Ninth Wonder” - opening play in the Sydney Stories season. 

More recently in Scotland, Grace was artistic director of Skeklers Theatre Company and directed “Zander’s Boat”, “Circles and Tides” and the award winning “Trumpet”  - which was seen in Manchester and London - for the company.

As a playwright Grace’s work includes: “Auld Lang Syne” Traverse Theatre Company, Edinburgh, “Wave Me Goodbye” and “Another Lovely War” Theatre Workshop, Edinburgh, “Lavender Blue” Royal Lyceum Theatre Company, Edinburgh, “Angels’ Wings” Orah Mor, Glasgow.  Her play “Zander’s Boat” has been seen in Scotland, Dublin and the US, and adapted by BBC Radio 4.  Her theatre adaptations include  “Treasure Island” for Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Jackie Kay’s “Trumpet” for Skeklers.  Grace recently wrote the script for the highly successful musical “Nevermore” which premiered at Signature Theatre, and she is currently writing the book for a new musical with composer Matt Connor – “Crossing” – which will premiere at Signature in 2013.
