Suzanne Shakespeare

 

 

Australian soprano Suzanne Shakespeare holds an Artist Diploma in Opera at the Royal College of Music International Opera School London.  She also has a Master of Music Performance (University of Melbourne, Australia) and a Licentiate of Trinity College London (Distinction) in both Voice and Piano. 

Suzanne was awarded the Georgina Joshi Award for 2008-10, the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship and The Royal Over-Seas League Music Bursary (Australian Singing Competition).  She has been supported by the Josephine Baker Trust, the Ian Potter Cultural Trust and was a Recommended Artist for Making Music's Philip & Dorothy Green Award for 2009.  Suzanne is the British School at Rome Youth Music Foundation of Australia Scholar for 2008-11.

Operatic roles include Königin der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte, Tytania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Esmeralda in The Bartered Bride, Serpetta in La finta giardiniera, Controller in Flight (excerpts), Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos (excerpts) at the RCMIOS, Morgana in Alcina (cover) for English Touring Opera, Musetta in La bohème, Adina in Elixir of Love (cover) for Victorian Opera, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia for Opera Australia’s OzOpera, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Medora in Il Corsaro for Melbourne City Opera, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro and Frasquita in Carmen for Melbourne Opera.

Recent highlights include performing with Sir Thomas Allen in excerpts of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Krenek's Die Nachtigall for the RCM Chamber Concert Series, the role of Erato in Handel’s Terpsichore for the London Handel Festival, and performing a world premiere by Dimitri Scarlato in the RCM 'Rising Stars' Chamber Concerts Series at Cadogan Hall. Suzanne performed the role of Donna Anna in a concert performance of Don Giovanni with the Camden Chamber Orchestra in July and returned to Australia for the 2010 Australian Festival of Chamber Music performing with Piers Lane, Bernedene Blaha, Jack Liebeck, Alice Giles and Louise Hopkins. At the end of 2010 Suzanne also covered the role of Zina in Raskatov’s A Dog’s Heart with English National Opera and performed the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor for Guildford Opera, United Kingdom.  In 2011, Suzanne returned to Melbourne to perform the role of Königin der Nacht for Victorian Opera and in 2012 we see Suzanne as Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute) for Opera Australia.
