Schools Programs

Every year, Opera Australia performs to 80,000 primary school children throughout Victoria and NSW.

It's always a big event. Opera Australia arrives at the start of the school day, complete with opera costumes, sets, four singers and a pianist. They need a piano and about 40 minutes to set up in your hall (or any large space), then they are ready to perform.

The Schools Company presents one or two sessions in a day, and each session consists of a 50-minute performance of a complete opera followed by 10 minutes of questions and answers with the students and teachers.

Preparation and follow-up is all part of the experience: when you book you receive an Opera Australia teacher resource pack. This includes suggestions for classroom extension activities both before and after the opera incursion.

Auslan Shadow Interpreted Performances

Opera Australia and Deaf Children Australia have formed a unique relationship to develop the new technique of presenting opera performances with Auslan Shadow Interpreters.

Shadow-interpreting incorporates the interpreters into the onstage action with stage direction & costumes, rather than having them stand on the side of stage; resulting in a much more comprehensive theatre-going experience for deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families.

Opera Australia has been developing this program with Deaf Children Australia since 2010. This exciting program is delivered through Opera Australia's primary schools tour in Victoria, and will expand into NSW for the first time in 2014. For more information, contact touring@opera.org.au.

In 2013 Oz Opera was the Victorian winner of the Creative Partnerships Australia Arts Access Award for this program.
