Participation and excellence united
At Opera Australia we believe a love for the arts is a life long journey which will enrich your life in immeasurable ways. It keeps on giving.
In 2014 and 2015, Opera Australia will enable children all across Australia to take the first step on their own special journeys, through the innovative new programs: The Magic Flute Children’s Chorus and Regional Student Scholarship. All local presenters are offered the opportunity to participate in these programs for no additional fee.
The Magic Flute Children’s Chorus offers each community the tour will visit the opportunity to engage a local chorus of up to 24 children aged between 9 and 14 years to feature as the Chorus in our new production of The Magic Flute.
The Children’s Chorus will be a collaborative process that encourages teamwork, focus, participation and confidence as well as a love of music.
Be a part of The Magic Flute, directed by Michael Gow
The Magic Flute is Mozart’s classic fairy tale featuring some of the most beloved and recognisable opera music, including the virtuosic ‘Queen of the Night’ aria, as well as timeless themes of coming of age, facing adversity, the importance of forgiveness and good triumphing over evil.
Directed by acclaimed Australian playwright Michael Gow, this magical new production takes inspiration from adventure films like The Mummy and the Indiana Jones series. Featuring Tamino as an explorer on a mission to rescue the beautiful princess Pamina - trapped in an Egyptian tomb complete with buried treasure - this opera is for all the family.
Collaborating with local presenters
Opera Australia collaborates with the local presenters at each step of the process of to implement this program. A local choir leader will be provided with all the materials required to train the children beforehand and be given support and assistance as needed.
No more than two weeks before the performance, a Director and Chorus Master will travel to each town to rehearse the children into the performance.
On the day of the performance the children will be rehearsed onstage with the professional cast and orchestra, then perform in costume that night as the ‘three spirits’, the animals, and other chorus roles.
Side by side with some of Opera Australia’s finest singers, the Children's Chorus will feel the magic of taking a curtain call and receiving the instant positive feedback of applause from their family and friends in the audience.
Fostering the future of arts education
In the modern world it is becoming increasingly recognised that the skills engendered by a solid arts education are important for success in life and youth development. As part of Australia’s largest performing arts company, Opera Australia is uniquely in the position to be able to fulfill this need.
Participating in The Magic Flute Children’s Chorus will be a collaborative process that encourages teamwork, focus, participation and confidence.
The choruses will be mentored in musicianship and performance skills by working alongside Opera Australia’s world-class artists and technicians and will be supported and encouraged on each step of their journey by our creative and operational team.
Additionally, they will benefit from the process of engaging in rehearsals beforehand, which will instill a wider understanding of the art form of opera and which may spark interest in future artistic pursuits.
