New Year’s Eve in the area of Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House will be crowded. Plan ahead to avoid delays, and make sure you make the most out of your night.
Public transport is the best way to get around on New Year’s Eve, with many roads closed in the Sydney CBD, harbour foreshore, and various council areas.
When arriving at Circular Quay it is recommended that ticket holders approach the Sydney Opera House via Macquarie Street.
On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day there will be some roads closed before, during and after the event. Find out about road closures at www.sydneynewyearseve.com.
Ticket Check Points
As a ticket-holder, you’ll be required to show your Opera Australia tickets at security check points to gain access to the Sydney Opera House precinct.
If you are collecting your tickets on the night, the box office will be open from 5pm. You will need to present identification at these check points before making your way to the box office.
The precinct is serviced by excellent public transport options on New Year’s Eve, and this is the recommended way to travel to and from the event. Visit www.131500.com.au for advice and timetables.
Train: Extra trains will run on New Year’s Eve to get you to the city and home again. The nearest train stations are Martin Place, St James and Circular Quay, which are all in walking distance of the venue.
Bus: On New Year’s Eve extra buses will operate on some routes. Road closures in the Sydney CBD may mean that your bus stop will be moved, so visit www.131500.com.au for more information.
Ferry: Sydney ferries will be operating extra services until the harbour exclusion zone is in force. During the exclusion zone, ferry services will be cancelled.
While we recommend using public transport, the Sydney Opera House car park will be open with some special access timings. You will need to be parked by 11am on 31 December. Exit will be possible via the Macquarie Street to exit after 2.30am or later on 1 January 2012. For Sydney Opera House car park information, contact (02) 9247 7599.
The crowd and road closures can make it challenging for taxis to safely set-down and pick-up passengers. Taxis are in high demand on New Year’s Eve and therefore delays are likely. Taxi companies will not be able to take booking requests for pick up in areas where there are road closures and spectators wanting taxi transport out of the city are advised to use the secure taxi rank, which operates on Sydney New Year’s Eve. The secure taxi rank is at Elizabeth Street (east) between Liverpool Street and Nithsdale Lane, and will be staffed and managed from 9pm on 31 December 2013 to 5am on 1 January 2014.
We look forward to welcoming you to Opera Australia’s magnificent New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Sydney Opera House.
