Sydneysiders know how to have fun at the opera, whether it’s at the world’s most iconic theatre, on the harbour ooh-ing and ahh-ing at fireworks bursting over a waterborne stage, or at that beloved Sydney tradition, Opera in the Domain.
The most famous arias, under the stars - for free.
Every year we head to the park in our thousands to hear our brightest stars, under the stars and anyone who claims opera is an elitist art form should look at the size of the crowd at this cultural, communal celebration.
It’s time to crack a beer with the barber of Seville; toast La Traviata, and share some Pavlova with Pagliacci and experience a midsummer night’s dream that brings opera to the people.
Dress up – or not – it’s your night to enjoy powerful, impassioned voices soaring over a full orchestra in opera’s most celebrated arias and duets. Good times.
Food, beverage and seating

What to wear
There are no rules about what to wear at an opera performance. It is always fun to frock-up for the occasion, but dressing up is not mandatory. Remember this is an outdoor event, and you will be sitting on the ground, so most importantly you should dress for all weather conditions.
There are no cloak room facilities available. We recommend that you do not bring large or bulky items or items of significant value.
Mazda Opera in the Domain is General Admission - you can sit wherever you can find a spot. There is no undercover seating. Beach mats, towels, blankets and the ground beach chairs are permitted for you to bring to sit on for the performance. Please note: For the comfort of the audience high chairs and beach umbrellas are not allowed and, to protect the lawns, plastic sheeting and ice are not permitted on the grass.
