Regional Children's Chorus and Student Scholarship

Transforming children’s lives through the power of opera.

Opera is for everyone. We want every child in Australia to have the opportunity to experience opera – no matter where they live.

Every year Opera Australia conducts two inspired and enlightened programs for young Australians in regional Australia: the Regional Children’s Chorus and the Regional Student Scholarship program.

We need your support to continue running these programs.

In 2018, we'll tour Puccini’s Madame Butterfly to twenty-five regional communities in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. John Bell’s production has been specially devised to include a children’s chorus. In each town, sixteen young children are given the extraordinary opportunity to perform on stage alongside principal artists from Opera Australia.

During the course of the tour, we hold workshops and auditions for the Regional Student Scholarship program. In each town, up to ten senior students audition to win a scholarship designed to nurture a new generation of singers. The Scholarship winners are provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the Opera Centre in Sydney for an intensive learning program.

“Regional Australia is full of so many great young singers and so much passion. Kids gained this amazing connection to art and to their own feelings—that’s the power of our program.”

— Josh van Konkelenberg, Regional Children’s Chorus Master

Please donate to these programs. Any donation will help us create the next generation of opera singers and opera lovers.
