The Operative Word - Kanen Breen

The Operative Word with Kanen Breen, Nanki-Poo in The Mikado

Why do you do the job that you do?Because no one else will do it for me.

Who has influenced you most professionally? My colleagues are my greatest influence - they inspire, amaze, challenge and support me every working day, and make what I consider to be a pretty stressful job more like a game than the high-stakes, risky profession that it actually is.

Is there any other profession that you would have liked to have followed?I think I'm an awesome interior designer, but not everyone loves Bollywood Kitsch, so I would probably alienate most of Western society!

What is your idea of perfect happiness? No scores left in the ‘to do’ pile, no self- recrimination and no need to set the alarm.

If you could have dinner with a historical figure, who would it be?Handel, so I could poison him!

What is your greatest extravagance? Shoes, apparently.

One thing you regret is…I regret letting so much fear into my life. It's really hard to eradicate once it’s sunk its teeth into you.

Your idea of a perfect evening is…With friends, on a couch, with something dreadful on the television and something fabulous in my glass.

Who or what is the love of your life?Still searching...perhaps if I had more love in my life I wouldn't need all these shoes.

What are you optimistic about?I am optimistic that the lows will get higher and the highs will get lower.

You would like to devote more time to…Meditation.

What is your favourite food?Tacos, or a little dish Jacqui Dark and I like to call tuney num-nums.

Which is the opera that got you hooked?Peter Grimes.

Which opera do you never need to hear again?I love Philip Glass but I saw his Galileo Galilei in London years ago, and that nearly ended the affair.

If there’s one quote that really speaks to you it’s… ‘The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be afraid of making one’. I don't know who said it, but they were on to something.

What is your idea of misery?Standing in the wings, about to step on stage with no idea of what's going to come out of your mouth. Hideous beyond words.

You still hope to…I still hope to live within my means, but I hope even more that my means do not remain quite so meagre!

Which characteristics do you most admire in others?Courage and kindness.

You feel guilty when you think about….Unresolved issues and all the shoes that have taken over my bedroom.

What type of holiday do you most enjoy?Lazy holidays with very open itineraries suit me best, can't stand having to rush when I could amble, especially in other countries.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?I wish I believed more in myself.

Who is your favourite band?Devo or possibly early Jane's Addiction. Or the Ramones.

You spend too much money on…Gym memberships which lie dormant and bunches of basil that go off in my fridge before I get through them.

Your greatest achievement has been…Times when I have overcome an inner monologue of fear and doubt to produce some sort of wonderful outcome for myself, and then allowed myself to be proud of it.

The book everyone loved but you could not finish was....The first Harry Potter, Enid Blyton did it better!

What is your favourite kitchen appliance?  A really fantastic knife.

How do you stay up to date with new technology and trends?I don't, it's taken me over an hour to type these answers, and I never believe when I press send that an email will actually get there.

Who is your favourite heart throb?Any of the Khans from Bollywood, Saif, Shah Ruhk, Aamir but not Salman – he shoots panthers for sport.
