Tenor David Corcoran, grew up thinking he'd be a psychologist. Now that he's a singer, he has a love of for sourdough, Puccini and his wife and young son. To name a few. For more, read this month's Operative Word.

Why do you do the job that you do?

I am challenged by it every day and I always feel that I have more to learn.

Is there any other profession that you would have liked to have followed?

When I finished school I was going to become a Psychologist; I never imagined that I would be an opera singer. I didn’t even take singing lessons when I was at school.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

The look on my son’s face when he runs to me for a cuddle.

If you could have dinner with a historical figure, who would it be?

Giacomo Puccini. It would be wonderful to understand the man who created some of the world's best opera.

What is your greatest extravagance?

My new road bicycle.

One thing you regret is...

not knowing how to play the piano.

What is your favourite way to spend an evening?

Watching TV with my wife.

Who or what is the love of your life?

My wife and son.

You would like to devote more time to...

learning music. I can never prepare enough.

What is your favourite food?

Bread, especially Bourke St Bakery's Sourdough with Olives.

What is your most treasured possession?

My wedding ring.

Which is the opera that got you hooked?

Puccini's La bohème

Which opera do you never need to hear again?

Handel's Alcina. It just goes on.

You still hope to...

be singing in 30 years' time.

Honesty and straight-forwardness.

What type of holiday do you most enjoy?

One in a country where English is not the first language.

The one thing you would change about yourself?

My hairiness.

things that I don't really need to have but want to have.

Who is your favourite character from the opera world?

Peter Grimes... so far.

The book everyone loved but you could not finish was...

The Secret. I bought the DVD in Bali for $1 instead.

What is your favourite kitchen appliance?

My coffee machine.

If you could be anyone, who would you be?

A Buddhist monk.

Who is your favourite heart throb?

George Clooney. He looks very smooth.
