Meet Opera Australia stalwart Shane Lowrencev, Schaunard in La bohème and this month's Operative Word.
Why do you do the job that you do? I just love to sing.
Who has influenced you most professionally? I’m very lucky to be surrounded by many talented singers at Opera Australia, whom I observe and ask for advice about my performance. Many have influenced me and I respect them highly. They know who they are.
Is there any other profession that you would have liked to have followed? I would have liked to have been a palaeontologist.
What is your idea of perfect happiness? To be loved as much as you love.
If you could have dinner with a historical figure, who would it be? Abraham Lincoln.
What is your greatest extravagance? Shoes and leather jackets.
One thing you regret is…Not learning the piano when I was young.
If you could have any opera character as a friend, who would it be? All the lads in La bohème – I like being part of a close circle of friends.
Who or what is the love of your life? Singing, loyal friends and my family.
What are you optimistic about? Close friendships.
You would like to devote more time too…Listening to others and my teenage children.
What is your favourite food? I love Thai – bring on the chilli!
What is your most treasured possession? My copy of Brideshead Revisited which I bought at Castle Howard.
Which is the opera that got you hooked? Don Giovanni.
If there’s one quote that really speaks to you it’s…“To understand all is to forgive all”
What is your idea of misery? Never seeing my children again.
You still hope to…love, respect and care for others more.
Which characteristics do you most admire in others? Compassion, forgiveness and loyalty.
You feel guilty when you think about….buying another leather jacket.
What type of holiday do you most enjoy? The type of holiday where I don’t have to worry about learning another opera. Hasn’t happened yet!
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? The length of my arms… It makes buying leather jackets difficult!
Who is your favourite band? U2, The Cure and Radiohead.
You spend too much money on…leather jackets.
Your greatest achievement has been..Raising our four children.. had help with that one!
The book everyone loved but you could not finish was....The Great Warby Les Carlyon. Who has time to read when there are operas to learn? I’ll finish that book one day.
What is your favourite kitchen appliance? My rice cooker.
How do you stay up to date with new technology and trends? According to my friends, I don’t!
Who is your favourite heart throb? Uma Thurman.
