Why do you do the job that you do?

It was always my dream and to live your dream is like nothing else – a great privilege.

Is there any other profession that you would have liked to have followed?

No, once you're immersed in what you love you've found where you most need to be.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

I have just experienced it – holding my newborn baby in my arms!

If you could have dinner with a historical figure, who would it be?

New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary. Not just because he was the first climber known to have reached the summit of Everest but for his humanitarian work with the people of Nepal following the ascent.

What is your greatest extravagance?

I eat breakfast out every morning!

One thing you regret is...

Spending so much money trying to stop going bald.

What is your favourite way to spend an evening?

Dinner in with friends and family – I'm a homebody.

Who or what is the love of your life?

My wife and little newborn baby.

You would like to devote more time too...

Creating a home – I'm always travelling and I wish I had more time to just be at home and to work in the garden!

What is your favourite food?

Peanut butter.

What is your most treasured possession?

My wife gave me a little photo album in which she's put notes telling me how much she loves me. I take it with me everywhere.

Which is the opera that got you hooked?

The opera in which I made my Opera Australia debut – Cinderella.

Which opera do you never need to hear again?

I've yet to come across one that didn't give me at least some pleasure.

You still hope to...

Visit the parts of New Zealand I haven't yet explored. Although it’s my homeland, there are places I've yet to see.

Which characteristics do you most admire in others?

Honesty, straightforwardness and integrity

You feel guilty when you think about....

Longing for home when I'm in a city by myself, stuck in a hotel room, I often remind myself how good I've got it and that many people have much bigger things to worry about. But it's hard not to miss home and the people you love when you're far away.

What type of holiday do you most enjoy?

Hanging out with people I love.

What would you change about yourself if you could?

I'd like to procrastinate less.

Da Vinci Code – I couldn't get past the first ten pages and even the movie was boring!
