Sydney Opera House

OperaEd gives secondary students the ultimate, behind-the-scenes opera experience.

Students who would otherwise be unlikely to attend an opera performance are given a uniquely memorable opportunity to do so.  OperaEd invites them to step behind the scenes into the whole process of creating opera – from what happens in the workshop and wardrobe to bumping in the set on stage.

This project provides a snapshot of all the elements involved in developing and staging opera productions on a grand scale. Students are introduced to opera at an in-school workshop then participate in a project day, which includes a tour of the opera centre in Surry Hills, a drama workshop, a student concert, the opportunity to meet opera production staff, musicians and singers plus see an opera performance at the Sydney Opera House.

OperaEd was inspired by the vision of Fred Street AM.

“It was the best, most memorable day of my life.  I learned so much about operas. I wasn’t sure of how I’d like it but it was awesome.”
