Alfons Flores

Born in Barcelona, since making his professional debut both as a director and set designer with the GAT Company which he helped establish, his productions in both theatre and opera have been seen in major theatres around the world, including Catalunya’s National Theatre, Athen’s Megaron, La Scala in Milan, ENO in London, Teatre Liceu in Barcelona, Opera La Monnaie de Munt in Brussels, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Adelaide Festival, Teatro Real in Madrid, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Lyon Opera and Teatro Mayor in Bogota. His work in theatre includes plays by Adamov, Beckett, Buechner, De Rojas, De FIlippo, De Vega, Dostoyevsky, Dagom, Lorca, Guimerá, Shakespeare, Strindberg, Valle-Inclán, Vitemberg, Luchetto, De Sagarra, Sade, Deutsche, Moliere and Widekind.

Alfons Flores has designed some remarkable work in collaboration with some of the most highly regarded directors, including Àlex Ollé and Carlus Padrissa (Fura dels Baus), Mario Gas, Ferrán Madico, Joan Lluis Bozzo, Josep Maria Mestres, Carlos Wagner, Stephan Märki, Joan Anton Rechi or Calixto Bieito.

Alfons has designed the sets for some large scale format shows including The Iceberg for the International Expo in Saragossa, Spain; the opening ceremony for the ‘Forum of Cultures’ in Barcelona; and ‘Windows of the City’ at World Expo Shanghai, China.

His first works in opera were with Calixto Bieito: Bizet’s Carmen, one of the most successful productions of this opera and still showing at ENO in November 2012; Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and Berg’s Wozzeck. He has since worked with other leading directors in titles such as Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, Szymanowski’s Krol Roger, Rossini’s Il Duca d’Alba. His collaboration with Àlex Ollé and La Fura dels Baus has produced superb designs for Le Grand Macabre by Ligeti, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny by Brecht and libretto by Kurt Weil, Oedipe by Enescu and the world première of Quartett by Francesconi at La Scala in Milan.

Alfons has been awarded many prizes in his career including critics’ prizes in Dublin and Barcelona.
