Leave a gift in your will
Of the many ways to help Opera Australia, one of the most valuable is by leaving a gift in your will to the Opera Australia Capital Fund.
The opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973 was a day of tremendous celebration and national pride. Huge crowds gathered at the site and at harbourside vantage points while millions more watched the festivities unfold via a live television broadcast. With its stunning Danish design, the building had “captured the imagination of the world”, Queen Elizabeth II observed.
Yet what is a magnificent Opera House — the single icon in the world that symbolises Australia — without opera? And opera of a standard which fills Australians with pride.
Nothing beats opera for its music, drama and spectacle. Plots recalling the universal themes of love, loss, joy and passion create the big moments in opera which evoke powerful emotions and move and inspire us beyond our everyday lives.
There are exquisite costumes, clever stage designs, dance elements, fabulous orchestras playing the most exhilarating music and of course, the singing voice, the human instrument which communicates emotions in a way that is unmatched by anything else. The result is storytelling at its most vivid.
However, to produce this extraordinary art form — in our cities, in far-flung regional centres or on tour to international stages — requires time, labour and resource-intensive teams of talented people collaborating on the stage, below the stage, above the stage and away from the stage. Preparation begins well before the formal rehearsal period and the demands of complex music on singers’ voices are such that only a few performances are possible each week, reducing cost effectiveness.
Despite prudent cost management, Opera Australia relies on support from generous individuals to supplement other income sources in its endeavours to bring the very best opera to the stage.

We invite you to consider leaving a gift in your will to the Opera Australia Capital Fund to help secure the future of the national opera company for generations to come.
You don’t need to be wealthy to leave a gift in your will.
Every contribution is valued and will make a difference.
The Opera Australia Capital Fund is a trust fund whose primary role is to build capital reserves to help ensure the ongoing financial viability of the national opera company.
Donations and bequests to the Fund are immediately invested to build a corpus which remains protected while the income generated is directed to Opera Australia in the form of annual grants.
These grants assist the company to maintain its high standards, expand its community outreach programs and pursue its mission of presenting opera that excites audiences and sustains and develops the art form.
