Juan De Dios Mateos

Juan de Dios Mateos was born in Almeria (Andalusia, Spain). There he graduated in flute studies (Almeria) and completed his Masters in Drama and Opera Performance (Jaén). He has studied singing Coral Morales and Carlos Aransay and has taken part in masterclasses with Raina Kabaivanska, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Hedwig Fassbender, Ildar Abdrazakov, Luciana d’Intino and Jaume Aragall amongst others.

His singing career started in Le Nozze di Figaro (Basilio and Curzio) in 2009, followed by Don Giovanni (Don Ottavio), Bastien und Bastienne (Bastien), Luisa Fernanda (Javier). Between 2016 and 2018 he was a member of the Opera Studio at Opera National de Paris, where he sang Les Fêtes d’Hébè (Thélème / Mercure), Owen Wingrave (Sir Philip / Ballad Singer), Bastien et Bastienne (Bastien), Reigen (Der Soldat) and The Little Matchgirl Passion amongst other projects. The season 2017/18 saw debuts in Il Viaggio a Reims (Belfiore) at Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Il Viaggio a Reims (Don Luigino / Zefirino / Gelsomino) at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Conte d’Almaviva) at the Schloss Kirchstetten Klassik Festival (Austria). During the season 2018/19 Juan de Dios made his debut in Il Turco in Italia (Narciso) at Teatro Campoamor (Oviedo), L’Elisir d’amore (Nemorino) with Opéra Clandestin Paris and Il Viaggio a Reims (Belfiore) at Arts Centre Melbourne.   In 2019 he has also made his debut at Teatro Municipal Santiago de Chile in L’Italiana in Algeri (Lindoro), Rossini’s Messa di Gloria (Bucharest), Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (Malaga) and Australia (Sydney) with Il Viaggio a Reims. He has performed, among others, with conductors Giacomo Sagripanti, Patrick Lange, José Miguel Pérez-Sierra, Daniel Smith, Iván López Reynoso, Michael Thomas, Toufic Maatouk, Jonathan Williams, Hooman Khalatbari and Iñaki Encina.

Juan de Dios Mateos was awarded the Plácido Domingo Prize and the Ferrer-Salat Foundation Prize at the 56th Viñas International Competition Barcelona and the second prize of the Hariclea Darclée International Competition (Romania).

Future projects include Don Giovanni (Don Ottavio) at Sydney Opera House (2020), Semiramide (Mitrane) at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Staatsoper Hannover and at Teatro Cervantes Malaga.
