Mark Howett

Western Australian Mark Howett is a director for theatre, dance, opera and film, having started his career initially as a lighting designer. He studied Theatre Design, specialising in Lighting Design at the School of Drama 1981, Yale University. Since 1979, Mark Howett has worked with many international theatre, film, dance, and opera companies.

He directed and conceived a dance theatre piece, a German / Australian collaboration with the Farm “Good Little Soldier”. In 2005 he directed and co-wrote the ABC short film Gangu Mama as part of the Deadly Yarns initiative for the ABC. Recently he directed Kaya for Ochre Dance Company.

West End Credits include: Evita, 2014 (Dominion Theatre), Cabaret, 2012 (Savoy Theatre), Three Days in May, 2011 (Trafalgar Studios), A Country Girl, 2010 (Apollo Theatre), Dreamboats and Petticoats, 2009 (Savoy Theatre), A Daughter is a Daughter, 2009 (Trafalgar Studios).

Awards: Robert Helpmann Award for Cloudstreet (Director: Neil Armfield) 2002, Lighting Design. Robert Helpmann Award as Best Presented Concert for Kura Tunga, Australian Arts Orchestra, Lighting and Video for the production. Greenroom Award 2006 Best Lighting Design for The Love of three Oranges, Opera Australia, Lighting Design. Greenroom Award 2009 for Roadkill, The Farm.

Mark was Coordinator of Lighting Course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Edith Cowan University from 1996 to 2000. He continues to teach at Edith Cowan University. He was the artistic director for Ochre Contemporary Dance Co from 2016 to 2019.
