Otto Pichler

The Austrian choreographer and director is making his Opera Australia debut as choreographer for Barrie Kosky’s production of The Nose.

Otto Pichler was born in Salzburg, Austria, he studied at the Ballet School of the Landestheater Salzburg and the Performing Arts School of Theater an der Wien.

Following his stage career, Otto Pichler began working as a choreographer and director in 2001. He has worked with directors including Günter Krämer, Nicolas Brieger, David Mouchtar-Samorai, Stathis Livathinos, Bernd Mottl and Christof Loy, and choreographed productions for opera companies in Paris (The Ring Cycle), Dresden (Penthesilea, Die Fledermaus), Cologne (War and Peace, Turandot), Hanover (My Fairy Lady), Salzburg Festival (Mitridate, re di Ponto), Brussels (Aida) and Amsterdam (La Forza del Destino).

Since 2005 he enjoys a close collaboration with Barrie Kosky with whom he has created numerous productions, including Saul (Glyndebourne Festival), The Fiery Angel (Bavarian State Opera), Das Rheingold (Hanover), Carmen (Frankfurt, ROH London) and L’Orfeo, Kiss Me Kate, Ball im Savoy, La Belle Hélène, West Side Story, which he also co-directed, Pearls of Cleopatra and Fiddler on the Roof (Komische Oper Berlin).

His directing credits include Hello Dolly, Jekyll and Hyde, Jesus Christ Superstar and The Gypsy Princess.
