Catherine Foster

Catherine Foster is one of today’s leading sopranos, internationally acclaimed for her Wagner interpretations. She is regarded as one of the most significant artists of the past decade at the Bayreuth Festival, where she has sung Brünnhilde and Isolde.

She began her career as Queen of the Night with Welsh National Opera and English National Opera before moving to Germany to sing her first Wagner role, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser. After performing a wide range of roles including Mimì, Abigail, Elisabeth, Fidelio, Leonora, Tosca, Turandot and Kaiserin, she moved into the major Wagner and Strauss repertoire, adding Brünnhilde, Senta, Isolde, Elektra and Färberin.

Her career has taken her to leading opera houses worldwide, from Tokyo and Shanghai to London, Madrid and Berlin, collaborating with conductors such as Simone Young, Kirill Petrenko and Daniel Barenboim. A distinguished concert artist, she performs works including Verdi’s Requiem, Britten’s War Requiem, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony and Beethoven’s Ninth.

Her honours include an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Reginald Goodall Award.
