Hugh Halliday began his professional life dancing as member of Sadlers Wells Opera, was later a staff director at English National Opera and also directed for Opera North in Leeds and for Granada Television.
He first came to Australia in 1980 to stage the English National Opera production of Rossini’s Le Comte Ory for the Victoria State Opera and since emigrating in 1982, has established himself as one of this country’s busiest and most versatile directors.
For the Victoria State Opera his subsequent engagements included Iolanthe, The Pearlfishers, Die Fledermaus, The Magic Flute, and La Boheme which featured Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as Mimi.
For Opera Australia his directing includes this company’s current seasons of Rigoletto, Don Quichotte, Tosca, La Boheme, Falstaff, Madam Butterfly and The Barber Of Seville and the Victorian Schools Touring production of Hansel & Gretel in 2014 and 2015.
At Melbourne Opera, from 2004, until 2013, he held the position of Director Of Productions, directing Cosi Fan Tutte Don Giovanni, Die Fledermaus, Suor Angelica, The Italian Girl In Algiers, The Barber Of Seville, The Marriage Of Figaro, I Puritani, La Traviata, Tosca, I Pagliacci & Cavalleria Rusticana, The Merry Widow, Faust, Carmen, La Boheme, Fidelio and, most recently, The Pearlfishers, during 2014.
Other past engagements have included productions of The Barber Of Seville for WA Opera and Opera Queensland, La Boheme for the State Opera Of South Australia, La Traviata for Opera New Zealand and Faust for Canterbury Opera in Christchurch. He was associate director for the international arena production of Carmen in Melbourne, Zurich, Berlin and Munich, director of the epic stadium production of Aida for Michael Edgley International in Singapore, Perth and Auckland and of a series of opera and concerts as part of the events of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
