Maia Andrews

Maia Andrews is an award-winning soprano from Australia. She recently performed the leading role of Mimì in Puccini’s La Bohème on Opera Australia’s 2024 National Tour, performing in over 20 theatres across New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania.

In 2023, Maia was selected for the Opera Queensland Young Artist Program, where she starred in Sunset Opera and covered the role of Fiordiligi in Patrick Nolan’s celebrated production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. In 2022, she performed Une Italienne in Pinchgut Opera’s production of Charpentier’s Médée, and also sang in their concert series Women of the Pietà at the Sydney City Recital Hall and Melbourne Recital Centre.

Maia’s career has taken her across Europe, where she gained recognition for her portrayal of the title role in Grigori Frid’s Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank at Theater Altenburg Gera in 2020—a performance described as “a momentous event” that “both enthralled and touched the audience.” (Ostthüringer Zeitung). During her tenure at Theater Altenburg Gera, she also performed in numerous opera galas, including Freistatt schöner Geister, Die ganze Welt ist Himmelblau, and Kriminal-Tango, showcasing her versatility with excerpts ranging from Verdi to Weber, which were recorded and broadcast by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk.

Earlier in her career, Maia interpretated the role of Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Oper Oder-Spree Festival in 2019. Following this, she reprised the role of Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel for a second time with the Jenaer Philharmonie at the Volkshaus Jena. Other notable roles include Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), cover Musetta (La Bohème), and Zerlina (Don Giovanni).

On the concert stage, Maia has appeared as the soprano soloist in a wide range of works, including Bach’s Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Matthäus-Passion BWV 244, and Kantate BWV 42 (Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats), Dvořák’s Mass in D, Händel’s Israel in Egypt, Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42, Mozart’s Mass in C Maj, Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël, Schubert’s Mass in G Major, Tippett’s Crown of the Year, and Vivaldi’s Magnificat and Gloria.

Looking ahead, Maia is delighted to be working again with Opera Queensland, performing as the soprano soloist in Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle as part of the 2025 Brisbane Bel Canto Festival, conducted by Richard Mills. Later this year she will reprise the role of Mimì with Opera Australia, touring across Victoria, Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia.

Maia is a graduate of the Thüringer Opernstudio, holds a Master of Opera from the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar, a Diploma of Opera from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and a Bachelor of Music/Arts from the University of New South Wales. Maia has received support and scholarships from Opera Australia’s Johnson Bequest, the German-Australian Opera Grant, the Helpmann Family Foundation, the Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Foundation, the Patricia Lucas Music Achievement Award, the NSW Wagner Society, and the Opera and Arts Support Group.
