Tony Gault
Principal First Violin
Tony began the violin at age 7 studying with Joanne Donnellan in Ferndale Washington and subsequently studied with Charmian Gadd, Richard Goldner, Margaret Pardee, Gwen Thompson, and Eudice Shapiro at the University of Southern California. Tony joined the Opera Australia Orchestra in 1993 as Principal Second Violin and now holds the position of Principal First Violin.
He has appeared as soloist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and the West Australia Symphony Orchestra as well as the Opera Australia Orchestra. Tony is also a former member of the Sydney String Quartet and has performed regularly as a chamber musician with Charmian Gadd, Georg Pedersen and Phillip Shovk.
Some of Tony’s highlights while working in the orchestra are performing Jenufa with Sir Charles Mackerras, Il Trittico with Carlo Felice Cillario and The Love for Three Oranges with Richard Hickox CBE.
Fun fact: An interesting fact that Tony has always found funny was that Albert Einstein played the violin. He was accused by his chamber music partners of not being able to count very well!
