David Corcoran

Melbourne-born David Corcoran completed Psychology at Deakin University before commencing singing studies with John Lander in 2002. In 2004, he moved to Sydney, undertaking the Diploma of Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Dr Rowena Cowley. David was the recipient of the Ronald Dowd Memorial scholarship (2005), the Helpmann Family Scholarship (2004 & 2005) and Opera Foundation Australia’s 2006 Italian Opera Award. In 2007 he won the prestigious Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Operatic Aria Competition.



David began his professional singing career with the Chorus of Opera Australia in 2006. During his time in the chorus he also sang many small roles in main stage productions and also toured with Opera Australia's Regional Touring Company in their production of Madama Butterfly as Lieutenant Pinkerton. David became a member of the Opera Australia Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Program in 2009/2010. Since then his roles for Opera Australia have included Rodolfo (La bohème), Zinovy Ismailov (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Victorin (Die tote Stadt), the Duke of Mantua  and Borsa (Rigoletto), Pinkerton, Nick (La Fanciulla del West), Narraboth (Salome), David in the world premiere seasons of Brett Dean’s Bliss in Melbourne, Sydney and at the Edinburgh Festival, Captain/Hippolytus/Narrator (Richard Mills’ The Love of the Nightingale), Carlson (Of Mice and Men), Pong (Turandot) and Bob Boles (Peter Grimes).



David is also at home on the concert platform, and amongst his numerous performances are Haydn’s Creation and the Rogers and Hammerstein program, Something Wonderful, both for Sydney Philharmonia; Classical Spectacular with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; the 2009 New Year’s Eve Gala Concert with Opera Australia; the hugely successful Twilight at Taronga series; Opera in the Paddock, Inverell, as well as corporate events for Cricket Australia and the Sydney Opera House.



Recently for Opera Australia David has performed Roderigo (Otello) and Borsa, and his major cover roles have included Siegmund (Die Walküre) and Froh (Das Rheingold) for the Melbourne Ring Cycle, Don José (Carmen), Cassio (Otello) and Mayor Upfold (Albert Herring). He has also performed in recital with Wagner Society NSW, and with Art Song NSW.
