Gillian Hansen holds the position of Tutti Bassoon in the Opera Australia Orchestra, having first joined in 2006. Gillian started her bassoon studies at the age of thirteen. Under the tutelage of Peter Moore, Eckart Hübner (bassoon) and Thomas Kollikowsky (contrabassoon), she went on to complete a Bachelor of Music (Hons) and Diploma of Music Performance at The University of Western Australia and The Berlin University of the Arts. Gillian began her career when she won an internship to play with the Duisburger Philharmoniker, Deutsche Oper am Rhein for a year. She has also performed with the WA, Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras.
Gillian has received awards including the ‘WA Citizen of the Year’ Youth Arts Award, ‘DAAD’ (German Academic Exchange) scholarship, WA Youth Orchestra/Arts WA grant and the Dettman Scholarship.
Gillian's love of music has taken her all over the world. With ensembles including The UNESCO Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, WA and Australian Youth Orchestras, Gillian has travelled to South Eastern Europe, China, Malaysia and Western Europe to perform.
Fun fact: On one occasion, Gillian lost her bassoon crook (the curved tube that connects the reed to the rest of the instrument) during an interval. She was just about to panic as the Orchestra started tuning when she saw it dangling from the safety net that covers the pit. It had hooked itself on as she lifted the instrument earlier!
