Julie Lynch

Julie has worked extensively as a costume and set designer in Australian theatre and was Head of Costume at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) between 2000 and 2005. Julie has won three Sydney Theatre Awards and two Helpmann Awards for Best Costume Design. These awards were for: Travesties (Sydney Theatre Award 2009) for STC; The Bourgeois Gentleman (Sydney Theatre Award 2006) for STC and Festen (Sydney Theatre Award 2005) and The Rocky Horror Show (Helpmann Award 2007) for Dainty Consolidated Entertainment and The Way of the World (Helpmann Award 2003) for STC.

In 2012 Julie was Set and Costume Designer for Opera Australia’s Salome and Costume Designer for Handa on Sydney Harbour’s Carmen. Her major credits include for the STC: Zebra (2011), The God of Carnage (2009), Chasing the Dragon (1998), Del Del (set and costume) (1998), What is the Matter with Mary Jane (set and costume) (1997), The Herbal Bed (1997), Death and the Maiden (1992), The Byzantine Flowers (1989) and The Ham Funeral (1989). For Opera Australia: La Boheme (2011), Don Giovanni (costume design realisation) (2008) and The Summer of the Seventeenth Doll (1995). For State Theatre Company of South Australia: The Misanthrope (2011), Hating Alison Ashley (set and costume design) (1988), Beauty and the Beast (set and costume design) (1988), Shepherd on the Rocks (1987), Shorts in the Space (set and costume design) (1987), Pravda (1986) and The Small Poppies (set and costume design) (1986). For Belvoir Street: Buried Child (2002), Trouble in Tahiti (1998), Love Burns (1998), The Floating Lady (1997), The Floating Zig Zag Woman (1997) and Wasp (1996). Other credits include Pericles (Bell Shakespeare Company) (2009), for 2008 Little Women: The Musical (Kookaburra National Musical Company), Mary Stuart (Ensemble Theatre), Madam Butterfly (Oz Opera -set and costume design realisation), The Stations of the Cross (World Youth Day Incorporated) and As You Like It (Bell Shakespeare), for 2007 Company (Kookaburra National Musical Company), The Birds (NIDA) and Kaidan (Sydney Festival) and Sweeney Todd (NIDA) (2006).

Her television credits include Costume Design for Hi 5 (Channel 9) for 2010.

Julie was the recipient of the Woman and Arts Fellowship and the Rex Cramphorn Scholarship in 2010. She lectures in Costume Design and History of Costume at NIDA, UTS and Ultimo Institute of Technology.

Julie is the 2011 winner of the Australian Production Design Guild Awards for Costume Design on La bohème (Opera Australia).
