Rodula Gaitanou

Rodula is an Athens born, Paris trained, London based international opera director.

Recent productions include: Vanessa (Barber) for Wexford Festival Opera; Queen of Spades (Tchaikovsky) for Opera Holland Park in London; Cenerentola (Rossini) for Teatro Verdi di Trieste; Tosca for the Xi’an Concert Hall in China; Cosi fan tutte (Mozart) and Cenerentola (Rossini) for the Greek National Opera; L’isola disabitata (Haydn) for the Royal Opera House – Covent Garden and Hobart Baroque; Ariane, Alexandre bis (Martinů) San Giovanni Battista (Stradella) and The Cooper (Arne) for Guildhall School of Music and Drama;  Riders to the Sea (Vaughan Williams), Savitri (Holst) and The Bartered Bride (Smetana) for British Youth Opera; Betrothal in a Monastery (Prokofiev) for RCS/Scottish Opera; a new version of Carmen (Bizet) at London’s King’s Head; a staged version of Dichterliebe (Schumann) in the ROH Linbury Studio; a site-specific performance of Rusalka (Dvorăk) for Opera North; a devised youth opera Where is The Love for Arcola Theatre; Suor Angelica (Puccini) for MOC; Orfeo (Monteverdi) and a staged version of Das Lied von der Erde (Mahler) for Paris 8 Opera.

Rodula has an on-going relationship with the Royal Opera House – Covent Garden: a former ROH Jette Parker Young Artist, she returns regularly as a revival and assistant director.

She was nominated for two Helpmann Awards (Sydney 2013) in the “Best Opera Director” and “Best Opera Production” categories for her production of L’isola disabitata presented at the inaugural Hobart Baroque Festival.

Rodula trained as a violinist at the “Mousikoi Orizontes” Conservatory in Athens, studied Musicology at Paris 4-Sorbonne University, Opera Staging at Paris 8 – Saint Denis University and physical theatre at the International Theatre School Jacques Lecoq. She has worked extensively as associate and assistant director for major opera houses and festivals in Britain, Spain, France, Italy, Ireland and Greece.

Future plans include: as director Ariadne auf Naxos (Strauss) Göteborg Operan in Sweden, the inaugural classical spectacular concert for Kazakhstan Expo 2017 and as a revival director Cavalleria Rusticana/ Pagliacci Royal Opera House, London and La Monnaie, Brussels.
