Simon Gilkes

London based, Australian Tenor Simon Chalford Gilkes graduated with a Masters in Vocal Performance as a Cuthbert Smith Scholar supported by the Richard Carne Charitable Trust and was previously a Richard Carne Scholar at the Royal College of Music, London in 2013 studying with Dinah Harris. Previously Simon has completed his Bachelor of Music, studying with Maree Ryan, in 2007 and then an Advanced Diploma of Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Opera School in 2010. Whilst studying, Simon was the Winner of the Joan Carden Award and the Recipient of the George and Margaret Henderson Travelling Scholarship at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and was also supported by the Opus 50 musical trust, Big Brother Movement and the Ian Potter Cultural Trust.

Simon has performed roles, covers and chorus for a number of opera and theatre companies, such as Opera Australia, Grange Park Opera, English Touring Opera, Wexford Festival Opera, Scottish Opera, Sydney Chamber Opera, Tete a Tete Opera and Present Tense. With these companies and whilst studying, Simon has performed a variety of roles, including Peter Quint (Turn of the Screw), Fenton (Merry Wives of Windsor), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Borsa (Rigoletto), Trin (Fanciulla del West), Grimoaldo (Rodelinda), Bajazet (Tamerlano), Arnalta (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Monsieur Triquet (Eugene Onegin), Don Curzio (Le Nozze di Figaro), Le Mari (Les mamelles de Tirésias), Mr Upford (Albert Herring), Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas) and The Schoolmaster (Cunning Little Vixen).
