3 operas perfect for first-timers
Are you ready to take the plunge and experience your first opera? Or are you a seasoned fan, wanting to introduce somebody special to the greatest art form of all?
We have some great operas, many perfect for first-timers, playing at the Sydney Opera House this summer. Here’s a guide to some of our picks for opera newbies.
Verdi
La Traviata
2 January – 14 March 2024
Sydney Opera House
What’s it about? A fabulous, high-class courtesan (an old-fashioned term for an escort) falls madly in love. But tragedy is just around the corner: she’s developed an ominous sickness, and her lover’s father wants to break the couple apart.
Why should I see it? La Traviata is exactly what you think of when you imagine opera: lavish sets and costumes, luscious melodies, sky-high notes, and a tear-jerking ending. It’s the opera Julia Roberts sees in Pretty Woman, it’s said to have inspired Moulin Rouge!, and you probably already know at least one of the tunes.
Mozart
The Magic Flute
1 February – 16 March 2024
Sydney Opera House
What’s it about? A noble hero and his loveable sidekick must rescue a princess in mortal danger. In this magic world of monsters and creatures, nothing is as it seems.
Why should I see it? Firstly, it’s Mozart, so you know the music is great. And it features maybe the most famous piece of music from any opera: the Queen of the Night aria. The characters are weird and wonderful, with awesome costumes, and this production will be a rollicking adventure: funny and fun for all audiences.
Gluck
Orpheus & Eurydice
12 – 31 January 2024
Sydney Opera House
What’s it about? Our hero Orpheus journeys into hell to rescue his beloved Eurydice. He must complete his quest without looking back at Eurydice, or he’ll lose her forever.
Why should I see it? At just 80 minutes, this is a fabulous first taster of opera. Our production is visually stunning and physically thrilling, with acrobats from Circa performing alongside opera singers. With circus threaded throughout, this isn’t a typical night at the opera.
