General auditions are held a few times a year in Sydney and Melbourne. Interested singers should complete the application form.

There are no set dates for casual auditions. Auditions are scheduled at mutually suitable times throughout the year. Your details will be held on file until the orchestra has a need for more casual players of your instrument, at which time you will be contacted.
The Opera Australia Orchestra seeks an outstanding musician to fill the permanent position of Associate Principal Viola.
Remuneration Package: including superannuation and allowances: from $103,602 plus parking reimbursement
There are two selection routes for the Associate Principal Viola position, either;
1. Expressions of interest (EOI);
(NB: Candidates may only apply for one selection route)
1. Expressions of Interest (EOI)
The EOI process aims to identify a suitable individual to fill the Associate Principal Viola position. All applications will be subject to a review of CVs and recorded material. Successful candidates will be invited to do a short trial, involving performances of 1 or more opera, as well as a short recital; more details will be provided on application.
If an EOI applicant is not selected from the shortlisting round, they may still be invited to join the audition process and play a live audition on May 7 and May 8. Any travel required would be at the candidate’s expense.
The Trial Process:
Following the conclusion of the short trials, a substantive trial (usually 6 – 9 months) will be offered to the preferred candidate.
EOI application procedure:
This process is open to international candidates. Interested musicians will need to submit the following:
- Online application form
- Curriculum Vitae included with contact details for 2 referees (maximum 2 pages)
- Audio visual recording (URL: YouTube or Vimeo ONLY) consisting of
- First movement of a classical concerto of own choice: exposition plus cadenza
- Excerpt from Arabella (R. Strauss)
- Orchestral excerpt will be released to candidates on application
Recording instructions and excerpt will be available upon application.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: APPLY NOW
An audition will be held on in Sydney on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 May. This audition is open to international candidates (travel at own expense). The outcome of the audition will be to select one or more suitable candidates to take part in the short trial process.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to perform a live audition. If you are unable to attend on the day, please advise on application to receive information about submitting a recorded audition. NB: EOI applicants who have been offered an audition must play live (i.e. they may not submit a recording).
- First movement plus cadenza of a classical concerto of own choice exposition and cadenza
- First movement of the Bartok or Walton concerto
- Orchestral excerpts will be released to candidates on application
