Alexandra Thompson
Alexandra has recently completed her Bachelor of Music Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under the guidance of Alex Henery. During her studies she was awarded the Michael Bannigan Scholarship for Double Bass and the Dean’s List of Excellence in Academic Performance for 2024. Growing up in Adelaide, she began her musical journey at the age of seven, studying with David Schilling, which sparked her passion for classical music.
Alexandra is a casual musician with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and the Opera Australia Orchestra. She has gained extensive orchestral experience through her involvement with the Sydney Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and Adelaide Youth Orchestra, frequently performing as Principal and Associate Principal. During her time at the Conservatorium she has collaborated with distinguished guest artists and fellow students, including the Sydney Conservatorium Anthony Marwood Ensemble in 2025. Alongside her orchestral work, Alexandra has performed as a soloist at UKARIA, where she played Variations on a Theme by Rossini by Niccolò Paganini, mentored by Jonathan Coco.
Alexandra has been an active participant with the Australian Youth Orchestra, taking part in the 2022 Australian Youth Orchestra Winter Season, which toured Australia under the baton of Sir Mark Elder, as well as the 2022 Summer Season, conducted by Matthew Corey, featuring soloist Pei-Sian Ng on cello. In 2025, she embarked on the exciting month-long Australian Youth Orchestra International Tour working with David Robertson, William Barton and Christian Li.
Alexandra is very excited to continue playing with Opera Australia in 2026 as the Double Bass fellow.
