Ben Opie

Oboist, Ben Opie is a dynamic artist exploring many facets of the music industry, from leading ensembles and symphony orchestras across diverse genres. Highlights include the world premiere of Luke Styles’ Neon Highway, an immersive reinterpretation of Holst’s The Planets with new works by Johannes Luebbers, and performing in the premiere season of Oscar and Lucinda with Sydney Chamber Opera. In 2014, he co-founded Inventi Ensemble with Johannes Luebbers and Melissa Doecke. They have commissioned numerous works, created concert series across Melbourne, and led music workshops in immigration detention centres. Their interactive children’s programs include instrument making, improvisation, and composition. Ben frequently collaborates with artists across disciplines – visual, dance, sound, poetry, and more. His outreach includes work with Indigenous artists, Syrian refugee children at the Flying Carpet Festival, and children with vision impairment. Internationally recognised, Ben has received numerous awards and teaches nationally, including as oboe specialist for Graham Abbott’s Keys to Music on ABC Classic FM.
