Dominic Longhurst

Dominic Longhurst is Principal Trumpet of Opera Australia. Born and raised in Sydney, he has built a distinguished career as a performer, conductor and educator, bringing to the company broad experience developed across Australia and the United Kingdom.

Dominic graduated with First Class Honours from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied with Gareth Small and Murray Greig. Throughout his career he has been mentored by renowned conductor and educator Prof. David King, whose influence continues to shape his music-making.

Dominic began his musical life as a cornet player and, while in the UK, held principal positions with the legendary Brighouse & Rastrick Band, appeared as Guest Principal Cornet with Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and was awarded the Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Award in 2018. He has also performed with The Hallé, Dutch National Opera and Symphonic Brass of London.

Since returning to Australia, Dominic has established himself as one of the country’s leading freelance trumpet players, recognised for moving fluently between operatic, orchestral, theatre and commercial styles. He has appeared as Guest Principal Trumpet with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Tasmania Symphony Orchestra, was the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellow in 2022, and is increasingly recognised as a recording artist, with his distinctive sound sought after for soundtrack sessions across film, television and video games.

Dominic was drawn to the trumpet for its heraldic and expressive qualities. Away from the stage, he is Musical Director of Willoughby City Bands, where he is passionate about inspiring musicians and building community.
