Hans Schavernoch

Hans Schavernoch is one of the most renowned stage designer of our time and has worked in all the major theatres and festivals in the world including Vienna, London, New York, Amsterdam, Munich, Chicago, Florence, Los Angeles, Madrid, Tokyo, Dresden, Frankfurt (2009 Pfitzner’s Palestrina, 2010 Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust), Barcelona, Zurich (2011 Wagner’s Tannhäuser, 2012 Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), and Paris (2011 Bastille – Gounod’s Faust). His recent works: Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier in Florence (2012) and Prokofiev’s The Gambler at Frankfurt Opera (2013)

At the Theatre an der Wien, he was the stage designer of Woolfson’s Freudiana (1990), Levay’s Elisabeth (1992) and Mozart! (1999) and Ariadne auf Naxos Ariadne auf Naxos (2010).

Since 1986 he has been working closely with Harry Kupfer at the Komische Oper in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, at the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festival (Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen) and at the Berlin State Opera (the entire Wagner cycle).

For his work he received the Laurence Olivier Award amongst others. Since 1995 he has been a professor for stage and costume design in Graz.
