Jake Bigwood

Winner of both the Regency Prize and AM Parker award for excellence; Jake Bigwood graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, London, with a Masters’ level distinction alongside an honorary Diploma for excellence.

Upon his return to Australia, Jake joined West Australian Opera as a Bendat scholar and Wesfarmer’s Arts Young Artist with whom he sang the roles of Il Maestro (Salieri’s Prima la musica e poi le parole), Angelotti (Tosca) in addition to jumping into the role of Sciarrone at a day’s notice due to cast illness. He also sang the roles of Colline and Ashby for Freeze Frame Opera and was named a finalist in both the IFAC Handa Australian Singing Competition, winning the Nelly Apt and Opera Australia prizes, and the Joan Sutherland Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Competion where he was awarded the friends of the foundation award.

2023 saw Jake continue as a Young artist and Bendat scholar and sang Zuniga, Bass soloist in a reworked interpretation of Bach’s Easter Oratorio, and Colline in a new production of La Boheme for West Australian Opera. In Freeze Frame Opera’s production of Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince Jake played the role of The King and was heard “plumbing the velvety depths of the ridiculous King with assuredness and great comic timing”.

Jake sang Colline in Montreal and worked with Nicole Car and Etienne Dupois alongside maestro Victorien Vanoosten at the ICAV summer program before returning home to produce and perform in a recital series with Bloomhouse Projects.

In 2024 Jake sang his first St Matthew passion with Perth Symphonic Chorale as well as Masetto for Freeze Frame Opera. The 2025 season saw Jake sing The Bonze for WA Opera’s production of Madama Butterfly before attending the Bayreuth Festspiel as a scholarship winner through the Wagner Society of Western Australia. Jake was also a finalist in the Herald Sun Aria competition.

Jake joined the Opera Australia chorus for their new 2026 production of Turandot before then joining the WASO chorus to sing the Flying Dutchman.

Jake returns to WA Opera to sing Le Duc in their production of Gounod’s Romeo and Juliette before joining the SSO chorus for their performances of Götterdämmerung.
