Katherine Lukey
Deputy Concertmaster
Katherine Lukey is Deputy Concertmaster of the Opera Australia Orchestra, a position she has held since 2016. She is also a member of the Australian World Orchestra and regularly appears as a guest violinist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Katherine has previously served as Assistant Concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Principal First Violin of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, she has performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Metropolitan Orchestra, Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra, and Darwin Symphony Orchestra. Her awards include first prizes in the Hephzibah Menuhin and Kendall Violin Competitions, and she was a finalist in the ABC Young Performers Award. Internationally, she has appeared as Guest Principal with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and has held guest principal positions with Orchestra Victoria, Auckland Philharmonia, and several Australian state orchestras. She is also a former member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra.
An alumna of the Australian National Academy of Music, Katherine completed her Master’s degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Alice Waten. She also studied with Tibor Varga, Silvia Marcovici, and William Hennessy.
Fun Fact: Opera has been part of Katherine’s life since early childhood. Her father sang as a bass-baritone soloist with state opera companies around Australia, and Katherine performed in the children’s chorus for Turandot and La Bohème.
