Matthew Tighe
Associate Principal Oboe
Matthew began oboe lessons at the age of 11 through a school music program. Upon finishing high school he was accepted in to the Victorian College of the Arts, completing a Bachelor of Music Performance in 1995.
Whilst there he took oboe lessons from Eve Newsome, who had a major influence on his development from student, to the beginning of a professional career as on orchestral musician. He also undertook post graduate studies with Diethelm Jonas in Trossingen and Emanuel Abbühl in Rotterdam.
Matthew has worked with the Melbourne and Tasmanian Sympony orchestras as well as the State Orchestra of Victoria prior to becoming Associate Principal Oboe of the Opera Australia Orchestra.
Matthew’s first musical instrument was the viola, which he occasionally regrets not continuing due to the stress of reed making associated with the oboe!
