Michael Smallwood

After studies at VCA, the Australian National Academy of Music and New York’s Juilliard School, Michael joined the ensemble of the Hamburg State Opera. Freelance since 2005, he has performed principal roles in many major houses in Europe and the US, including Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Berlin’s State Opera and Komische Oper, the Dresden Semperoper, Opéra National de Paris,  Lyon, Bordeaux, Dijon, Theater an der Wien, Madrid’s Teatro Real and Barcelona’s Liceu.  Festival appearances have included Santa Fe, Glyndebourne, Aix-en-Provence, RuhrTriennale, and Lincoln Center. He has collaborated with celebrated conductors including: Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Vladimir Jurowski, Kirill Petrenko, William Christie and René Jakobs.
