Robert Grubb

Since graduating from NIDA in 1978, Robert feels blessed to have worked so extensively in Australian theatre, film and television. Robert was most recently seen as Admiral Boom and the Chairman of the Bank in the Australian tour of Mary Poppins. Before that he appeared in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory as Grandpa Joe. He has delighted audiences in My Fair Lady as Alfred Doolittle for Opera Australia, for which he received a Helpmann nomination, played the title role in Ken Hill’s The Phantom of the Opera and captured everyone’s heart as Pop in We Will Rock You, which toured Australia and Japan and earned him a Helpmann Award for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Other theatre credits include George, the boxing coach in Billy Elliot, Bob in Priscilla Queen Of The Desert (Helpmann nomination), Singin’ In The Rain, Shane Warne The Musical, Moonshadow, Mame, the original Australian production of Sunset Boulevard, Rene Gallimard in M. Butterfly, Company, Wolf and Prince, in Into The Woods, The Resistible Rise Of Artuo Ui, Enoch Arden (Green Room nomination), Egerman in A Little Night Music, and of course the 2001-2002/2009-2010 tours of Mamma Mia! playing the role of Harry (Helpmann nomination). Robert has enjoyed playing Sir Humphrey in Yes, Prime Minister, the aging Mal in David Williamson’s Don Parties On, and was thrilled to be awarded the Sydney Theatre Award for his performance as Barry Fife in Strictly Ballroom The Musical.

Robert’s film credits include Waiting At The Royal, Paradise Road, fan favorite Pig Killer in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Inspector Morringer in Robbery Under Arms, Phar Lap, Billy in Peter Weir’s Gallipoli, and Frank Hawdon in My Brilliant Career for which he received the industry’s award for Best Supporting Actor.

One of Robert’s most memorable roles was Dr Geoff Standish in the popular TV series The Flying Doctors. Other credits include Mcleods Daughters, All Saints, Curtin, Mda, The Secret Life Of Us, After The Deluge, Salem’s Lot, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Reef Doctors, Howzat: Kerry Packer’s War, The Weatherman, Wentworth, Offspring, The Newsreader, ‘Detective Graves’ in Neighbours, and is still warmly remembered as Barry Boston in Seachange, and most recently as ‘Sgt Bill Kirby’ in the ABC’s nominated drama Savage River.
