Constantine Costi is an opera and theatre director.
This year Constantine directs Moliere’s THE HYPOCHONDRIAC for the National Institute of Dramatic Art; and BITTERSWEET OBSESSIONS: MONTEVERDI & BACH a double bill for the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. His staged version of Händel’s MESSIAH for the ABO received standing ovations and sell-out seasons in Sydney and Melbourne. Later this year, Constantine is revival director for Sir David McVicar’s Vienna State Opera production of FALSTAFF for the National Centre of Performing Arts in Beijing.
In 2016, Constantine directed Puccini’s SUOR ANGELICA for Opera Projects Sydney; co-wrote the immersive theatre experience VISITING HOURS for Sydney’s Vivid Festival; directed Puccini’s Il Tabarro at Alfie’s Sydney; and directed THE SPACE BETWEEN THE FUEL AND THE FIRE by Laura Lethlean for NIDA. The same year, Constantine worked with director Chen Shi-Zheng as assistant director for Australian Opera’s Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour production of Puccini’s TURANDOT.
In 2015, Constantine won The Berlin New Music Opera Award with The Opera Foundation for Young Australians where he worked with Komische Oper Berlin’s directing team on the premiere of Tchaikovsky’s EUGENE ONEGIN directed by Barrie Kosky.

For opera, Constantine’s assistant directing work includes: for Vienna State Opera with Sir David McVicar, FALSTAFF; for Schauspielhaus Vienna with Barbara Weber, HUNDE GOTTES; for Opera Australia with Sir David McVicar, THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO; and for OA with Hugh Halliday, the revival of LA TRAVIATA.
Constantine’s directing for screen includes: the music videos, I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE HIDING (Hedge Fund) and INTO MY ARMS (Bloods) for Triple J Unearthed; and the short films FERGUSON AND DAISY AND URSULA and DONNY.
Constantine is a graduate of NIDA in Directing and holds a Bachelor of Communications (Media Arts and Production) from University of Technology, Sydney. He is currently a member of the 2017 Belvoir Artists’ Workshop and was affiliate director with Griffin Theatre.
