Eszter Mikes-Liu

Associate Principal Cello

Eszter Mikes-Liu began playing the cello at age 7 with Mischa Gorbatov. She initially studied mathematics and psychology at University of Sydney, but at 20 she moved to Europe to complete a Bachelor of Music at the Royal College of Music, London and a Master of Music at Hochschule für Musik, Hannover.

Her principal teachers include Clive Greensmith, Steve Doane, Dimitri Ferschtman, and Tilmann Wick.

In 2000, Eszter became Associate Principal Cellist of the Opera Australia Orchestra. Drawn to the cello because her brothers played violin, she always enjoyed choosing something different. Outside music, she enjoys running, adores her two dogs, and her favorite opera is Die Rosenkavalier.
