Matthew Marshall

Matthew Marshall, a graduate of the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2001, is in demand for his dynamic lighting designs for theatre, opera, events and dance.

In 2015 Matt has designed stage lighting for New Breed at the Festspiele Ludwigshafen (Sydney Dance Company), La Traviata (Belvoir), iOTA in B Girl (Sydney Opera House)  and Velvet (Edinburgh Fringe, Sydney Opera House).  Previous credits include The Winters Tale (Bell Shakespeare), Band of Magicians (Sydney Festival, Crown Casino, NZ Tour), Day One, A Hotel, Evening (Black Swan State Theatre Company), Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree and Driving into Walls (Barking Gecko/PIAF).

Opera lighting designs include La Cenerentola (Oper Leipzig, NZ Opera), Armida, Bazajet, Iphigenie en Tauride (Pinchgut Opera), The Barber of Seville, Cinderella (Opera Queensland) Götterdämmerung, St Mathew Passion, A Flowering Tree, Candide (Perth International Arts Festival) and La Traviata (Oz Opera).

Event lighting designs include Beatbox (Dreamworld),Triple J’s 40th – Beat the Drum, Summer Sounds and Symphony in the Domain (Sydney Festival 2015), Art and About Launch 2014 transforming Martin Place into an Aussie backyard BBQ (City Of Sydney), 130 Years of Bvlgari (Rizer Events)  lighting $38M worth of Jewellery in the historic Carthona Darling Point. Matt was part of the creative team responsible for super club PACHA launching in Australia in 2012 (Merivale).

Other highlights include Helpmann Award winning Smoke and Mirrors by iOTA & Craig Ilott (Sydney Festival/Spiegeltent Intl), Paul White & Martin Del Amo’s Anatomy of an Afternoon (Performing Lines) at Sydney Opera House and Southbank Centre London, Language of Living, the debut of the New Zealand Dance Company, This is our Youth (Sydney Opera House) starring film stars Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin, Misanthropolology (Sydney Festival) with Eddie Perfect and Diamonds are for Trevor (Luckiest/Sydney Mardi Gras) starring Trevor Ashely. Matt has been resident lighting designer for 8 years on The Wharf Revue (Sydney Theatre Company).

Critical recognition includes The Helpmann Awards (Best Lighting Design 2012 nomination) and Australian Production & Design Guild (lighting design nominations 2013 & 2014).
