The Magic Flute - 2017 Victorian Schools Company

Opera singers are invited to audition for the Victorian Schools Company. The Company primarily tours to Primary Schools, however great demand for our productions see us regularly performing for community groups and theatres around Melbourne and Victoria. 

The Victorian Schools Company production for 2017 is Mozart’s The Magic Flute, adapted by Tim Sexton and Christine Anketell. The performance is approximately 50 minutes long and sung in English. 

A full-time fixed-term contract from 1 May to 12 August 2017 is offered, with a possible extension to 10 September 2017. The Schools Company conditions include:

  • A maximum 14 weeks of touring, which may include up to 5 weeks of regional touring.
  • A maximum of 3 shows per day, up to 12 shows per week.
  • The casting of swing and covers so that singers have some cover days.
  • All company members are required to bump the set and equipment in and out of each venue.
  • Artists with a valid driver’s licence are required to share driving company vehicles. It is preferred that singers have a full valid Australian driver’s licence.
  • All company members must provide a copy of their legal right to work in Australia (passport or birth certificate).
  • Full conditions are outlined in the Performers and Music Staff Agreement.

We are seeking 3 female and 4 male singers. The roles are as follows:
Queen of the Night/Lady/Papagena Soprano
Pamina Soprano
Female Swing Soprano
Tamino Tenor
Sarastro Bass
Male Swing Tamino/Papageno Tenor/Baritone
Male Swing Papageno/Sarastro Baritone

Audition Information & Requirements

Each audition will run for approximately 5 -10 minutes. Two arias must be prepared, with at least one in English. An accompanist will be provided by Opera Australia, however you are welcome to provide your own. You will need to bring a copy of your music.

Monday 14 November 2016, 9am - 4pm   
Melbourne Opera Centre, Corner of Fawkner and Fanning Streets, Southbank
Audition times will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis, and no changes will be made to those times except in exceptional circumstances.         

Callback Times:
Friday 18 November 2016, 9.30am - 2pm (excerpts & stagecraft)
Melbourne Opera Centre, Corner of Fawkner and Fanning Streets, Southbank
Only artists required for the callbacks will be notified, by COB Tuesday 15th November.

There are no set dates for casual auditions. Auditions are scheduled at mutually suitable times throughout the year. Your details will be held on file until the orchestra has a need for more casual players of your instrument, at which time you will be contacted.
