Malcolm Ede

Bass-Baritone Malcolm Ede is a performer at home in a wide range of musical styles, from the oratorios of Bach, Mozart and Handel through to the operatic works of Gounod, Verdi and Puccini. Making his operatic debut at the age of nineteen in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, Malcolm went on to study at the Australian National Academy of Music and the Queensland Conservatorium graduating in 2004 with a Master of Music. During this time Malcolm sang principal roles in productions of Semele, Die Zauberflote, The Burning Fiery Furnace and the Australian premiers of The Pilgrim’s Progress and Going Into Shadows. In 2005 Malcolm was a member of the New Zealand Opera’s Emerging Artist Program going on to make numerous appearances across NZ over the next three years in both opera and concert performances. Returning to Australia in 2008, Malcolm joined Opera Australia as a full-time chorus member and performing principal roles in several productions.

2008-Present
Full time ensemble member. Principal roles in Madama Butterfly, La Boheme, The Magic Flute, Macbeth, Pagliacci, Candide, Bliss, Rusalka. Countless performances as full-time chorus in dozens of operas. Multiple commercially released CD and DVD performances.

New Zealand Opera
2005-2008
Principal bass-baritone. Roles in Turandot, Fidelio, Salome, La Traviata, Die Zauberflote. Also performed widely as a concert soloist in oratorio and opera for all the major symphony orchestras and choral societies. Multiple CDs of concert performances.

Solo concert repertoire: Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music (Sydney Symphony), Don Fernando- Fidelio (Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra), Beethoven 9th Symphony (Christchurch Symphony), Bach Cantata 21 and St John Passion (Bach Musica), Mozart Coronation Mass (Wellington Bach Choir), Bach Magnificat (Queensland Choir and Orchestra), Mozart Requiem (Brisbane Chorale).
