About the Program

At Opera Australia, we believe that young artist development is essential to the ongoing success and enrichment of the company. Young artists ensure the sustainability of the art form and represent new and diverse voices and perspectives that will shape the future of opera.

The Opera Australia Young Artist Program provides professional development for the next generation of Australian talent, preparing them for the opportunities and challenges that artists face when they enter the profession.

The flagship Opera Australia Young Artist Program is aimed at emerging artists who we believe, with our guidance and support, can expect a successful career on the global stage.

Opera Australia is committed to cultivating, advancing and preserving a culture of diversity, inclusion and belonging.

The Opera Australia Young Artist Program recognises and celebrates the diversity of the Australian performing community, and we seek to foster a more realistic and more creative representation of Australia in our programs and on our stages.

We strongly encourage submissions from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and performers of various experience, perspective, education, identity, expression and circumstance, including those of cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Chelsea Burns, soprano

Since arriving, I have made big gains in both my singing and artistry. I have a large voice and did not realise until coming here that I had never had the opportunity to sing ‘full throttle’. “
