Nicole Car

Soprano

Nicole Car is one of the most outstanding young singers to emerge from Australia in recent years.

After completing her Bachelor of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts, Nicole won the 2007 Herald-Sun Aria; she was the 2012 winner of the ASC Opera Awards and the 2013 winner of the international Neue Stimmen competition in Germany.  Her major role debut occurred in 2009 performing Donna Anna in Victorian Opera's Don Giovanni.

For Opera Australia in 2011, she sang Donna Anna, Mimi in La bohème, Micaela in Carmen and the Italian Singer in Capriccio; for the QSO, she appeared as soloist in Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem.  Her work in Carmen earned Nicole her first Helpmann Award nomination and the following review from Opera Insider:

"...the find of the night. Nicole Car - what a voice! I don't think I can recall such an auspicious debut (at the Sydney Opera House)...since the 1970's...She was truly sensational with one of the most beautifully lyric, full-bodied and honeyed voices I have ever heard."

Nicole's roles for Opera Australia since 2012 have included Mimi, Micaela, Pamina in a new production of The Magic Flute, Leila in The Pearl Fishers and Valencienne in The Merry Widow.  For West Australian Opera, she sang Donna Anna in 2013.

Concert engagements have included Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem for the Queensland and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras; Das Klagende Lied for the QSO; The Last Night of the Proms for the TSO; Mozart’s Requiem for the Auckland Philharmonia and a major programme of Strauss and Mozart with the Melbourne Symphony.

Nicole is in increasing demand as a recording artist  - appearing as soloist in the Deutsches Requiem for the MSO with bass-baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes (ABC Classics), as featured artist on Rule Britannia! for the TSO (ABC Classics) and as Micaela in Carmen for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour (CD/DVD - Opera Australia).

In 2014, Nicole Car sings Mimi, Tatyana in Eugene Onegin and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni for Opera Australia and Adalgisa in Norma for Victorian Opera.  She makes her Sydney Symphony debut as soprano soloist in Elijah and her (soon to be announced) American debut in October/November.
