David Clarence

Born, Sydney. Attended Sydney Conservatorium High School beginning on trumpet and piano. At 14 took up timpani and percussion studies with John Purdon, then timpanist of the Elizabethan Trust Sydney Orchestra, the prior incarnation of the AOBO. Joined the Sydney Symphony percussion section in 1980. Member of the percussion group Synergy 1981-83. Left Australia in 1983 to pursue studies and a woman (both successfully). Returned home in 1986 to take up the position of principal timpani with the AOBO. When not pounding the skins into submission prefers to be hurtling down 90km/h Pyrenean descents on his bicycle.
