Background: Director of the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre with Philip Prowse and Robert David MacDonald from 1969 to 2003. He directed and acted with the Citizens' Company

Other Companies: Opera productions  include work with Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera, Buxton Festival, Wexford Festival, Minnesota Opera and Vancouver. He has adapted many novels for the stage including Travels With My Aunt by Graham Greene, Summer Lightning by P G Wodehouse and Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Laclos. He played his one-man adaptation of Death in Venice in Glasgow, New York and San Francisco. He is an associate artist of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco
