Stephen Baynes



Stephen Baynes was a dancer with The Australian Ballet and The Stuttgart Ballet before his choreographic talent was revealed with Stauss Songs,a piece created for a workshop at The Australian Ballet in 1986.In 1988 he won The Australian Ballet’s 25thanniversary choreographic competition with Ballade.

Catalyst,his first commissioned work for The Australian Ballet,premiered in 1990 and toured nationally.It was performed on the company’s 1992 tour of London (where it received a nomination for Best Dance Production at the Laurence Olivier Awards)and again in 1994 on their tour of the United States.

In 1995 Stephen was appointed The Australian Ballet’s resident choreographer and since then has created many works for the company.He received a Helpmann Award in2005 for Unspoken Dialoguesand Green Room Awards for Molto Vivacein 2004 and Constant Variantsin 2007. Stephen has had works commissioned by New York City Ballet,Pacific Northwest Ballet,Sydney Dance Company, Queensland Ballet, West Australian Ballet and Hong Kong Ballet.
