Tenor Gianluca Terranova is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after lyric tenors with his ease in the high register and great stage presence. In 2010 he had great personal success on the occasion of his Teatro alla Scala Milan debut as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto under the baton of James Conlon, with whom the tenor also appeared as the Duke at Los Angeles Opera for his successful American debut in November/December 2010.
Born in Rome, Terranova graduated with a degree in piano and was involved in a variety of activities in musical theatre and TV as an interpreter, composer and arranger. During this time he made his professional debut in Il barbiere di Siviglia in Rome, and was also heard in Falstaff, Madama Butterfly, Nabucco, Les contes d’Hoffmann, Mavra, Il pirata and Gina by Cilea.
In 2008 it happened that the tenor attracted international attention when he replaced an ill colleague at the last minute to make his debut as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto at the Arena di Verona conducted by Renato Palumbo. His great critical success led him to be considered nowadays as one of the great interpreters of the role of the Duke of Mantua and that debut launched him definitely within one moment to the attention of everybody in the opera field.
Still in October of the same year he appeared as Rodolfo in La bohème at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and was consequently invited by Zubin Mehta to participate in a special concert of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Maggio Musicale in front of an audience of 8,000. In February 2009 he appeared as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, a role in which he would also make his debut at the Frankfurt Opera the following May. He has also been heard as Alfredo in La Traviata at the Filarmonico di Verona and at La Fenice in Venice conducted by Myung Wung Chung and Rodolfo at the Puccini Festival Torre del Lago and at the Teatro Comunale in Bologn, the Duke in Rigoletto in Florence, Tonio in La fille du régiment in Trieste and in Como, Bergamo, Brescia (where he sang a new critical edition in italian of Donizetti’s opera).
In 2011 he was busy with a great number of his favourite titles, Rigoletto, La bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor, in many Italian major theatres, from the ‘La Fenice’ in Venice to the Teatro Regio in Turin, as well as a successful première of I puritani; 2012 he performed, among other engagements in La Damnation de Faust in Palermo, Lucia di Lammermoor in Naples and La bohème in Venice. Furthermore, he was chosen for the role of Alfredo in La Traviata for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour - La Traviata staged by Opera Australia in Sydney. He also performed the role of Enrico Caruso in the Italian TV-movie Caruso, la voce dell’amore. In October 2012 he released his first cd: Gianluca Terranova canta Caruso (EMI).
Major commitments for 2013 were La Bohème at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and at Opera Australia in Sydney, Rigoletto at the Arena Verona and the Wielki Theatre in Warszaw, La Traviata at the Oper Leipzig, his debut as ‘Gabriele Adorno’ in Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro Regio in Turin.
Engagements for 2014/2015 include, among others, Rigoletto in Sydney and Liège and La traviata at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
